Which Websites Does ChatGPT Cite Most for Brand Reviews?

When people search for brand reviews on ChatGPT, which third party websites shape the answers they see?

We studied 30 mid market brands across SaaS, ecommerce, and service businesses to find out.

By recording the sources ChatGPT cited for each “[Brand] reviews” query, we identified the most frequently cited platforms, category-specific patterns, and cases where ChatGPT returned unrelated sources.

Methodology: How we studied 30 brands

We selected 30 mid-market brands: 10 SaaS companies, 10 ecommerce brands, and 10 service businesses.

We hired a virtual assistant to manually check each brand. For every brand, the VA opened a fresh ChatGPT chat while signed out, entered the exact query “[Brand] reviews”, waited for the full answer, and recorded every source link shown. All 30 checks were completed on the same day, October 21, 2026, to capture one consistent snapshot.

ChatGPT did not show a formal Sources section in these answers. Every citation appeared as an inline link or pill in the answer body. We grouped the URLs by domain and reviewed the pages they pointed to.

A citation appearance is one source link recorded in an answer. Brand answers count the number of distinct brand answers that included a domain. One answer may include several URLs from the same domain, so total appearances can be higher than brand answer coverage. The category numbers represent citation appearances, not unique brands.

Why branded search queries are easy and important wins for SEO conversions

A branded search includes a company or product name, such as “[Brand] reviews”, “[Brand] pricing”, “Is [Brand] worth it?”

These searches are useful because the person already has a business in mind. They may be comparing options, checking customer feedback, or deciding whether to buy.

For example, someone searching for “Paymo reviews” may be comparing project management tools. Someone searching for “Quince reviews” may want to check customer experiences before ordering clothes.

When people ask ChatGPT instead of using a traditional search engine, the sources in its answer can shape what they learn about the brand.

That makes branded queries a practical place for SEO teams to start. They can help you:

  • Reach people who are close to a decision. Review searches often mean that someone is actively comparing options.
  • Build third-party trust. Independent reviews give people information beyond what a company says about itself.
  • Find opportunities to appear in AI answers. Knowing which domains ChatGPT cites helps you identify relevant places to build an accurate presence.
  • Spot gaps in your reputation. If a useful review platform has little information about your business, you may have an opportunity to earn genuine customer feedback.
  • Look beyond your own website. ChatGPT may cite review platforms, community discussions, industry sites, or other sources.

These are opportunities, not guarantees. We did not measure conversions or prove that a presence on any one platform leads to more citations.

Finding 1: BBB had the most citations, while Trustpilot appeared across more brands

We first counted how often each domain appeared across all 30 answers. BBB recorded 21 citation appearances, the highest total in the dataset. Trustpilot recorded 18. However, the brand answer count tells a different story: BBB appeared in 12 brand answers, while Trustpilot appeared in 18.

Third party domainTotal mentionsBrand answers
BBB2112
Trustpilot1818

BBB sometimes appeared more than once in a single answer because ChatGPT linked to separate pages, such as a business profile, customer reviews, and complaints. Trustpilot appeared across more distinct brand answers, with one appearance per brand answer in this dataset.

Trustpilot appeared in all three categories: four citation appearances for SaaS, eight for ecommerce, and six for services. BBB appeared 10 times in ecommerce answers and 11 times in service answers, but did not appear in the SaaS answers.

What this means: If you only rank platforms by total links, BBB looks like the clear leader. If you want to know which platforms appear across the widest range of brands, Trustpilot leads this sample. SEO teams should track both measures and choose platforms based on industry fit, not just the overall total.

Finding 2: BBB led the results for service businesses

We then looked only at the 10 service businesses. BBB recorded 11 citation appearances, more than any other domain in this category. Trustpilot followed with six. G2 and Clutch each recorded three.

Third party domainCitation appearances
BBB11
Trustpilot6
G23
Clutch3

The raw URLs help explain what these citations represented. Answers for 1-800Accountant, Xendoo, and Thrive Agency included BBB pages. Some links led to customer reviews or complaint pages, while others led to the main business profile.

Clutch appeared in answers for Disruptive Advertising and Consultwebs.

For someone choosing an accountant, bookkeeper, or marketing agency, these pages can offer information about customer feedback and business reputation. Still, the study does not show that BBB is the best platform for every service provider, or that BBB listings caused the citations.

What this means:

Service businesses should check whether BBB is relevant in their market, keep their business information accurate, and respond to customer concerns. Agencies can also review Clutch and other industry directories that their target customers use.

Finding 3: BBB and Reddit tied for ecommerce citations

For the 10 ecommerce brands, BBB and Reddit each recorded 10 citation appearances. Trustpilot followed with eight. This pattern differed from SaaS, where software review platforms appeared more often.

Third-party domainCitation appearances
BBB10
Reddit10
Trustpilot8

The individual URLs show that Reddit citations often pointed to discussions about real product experiences. The Christy Dawn answer included discussions about price and sizing. The Made In cookware answer included Reddit threads about cookware performance and durability. Burrow also had a Reddit discussion about delivery delays and customer experience.

These are different from formal review profiles. Community threads can include personal opinions, complaints, questions, and mixed experiences. ChatGPT may cite them as part of an answer, but a citation alone does not mean the discussion is accurate or representative of all customers.

What this means:

Ecommerce brands should monitor customer conversations and look for recurring questions about product quality, fit, shipping, returns, and durability. Use that feedback to improve product information and service. Participate in communities only when you can offer a useful, honest response. Do not post fake reviews or manufacture recommendations.

Finding 4: G2 and Capterra led for SaaS brands

Among the 10 SaaS brands, G2 recorded six citation appearances and Capterra recorded five. Trustpilot recorded four. The results suggest that software review platforms were more visible in this category than in the ecommerce answers.

Third party domainCitation appearances

The raw data includes G2 and Capterra review pages for products such as Paymo, Scoro, Brevo, and Omnisend. For some brands, ChatGPT cited both platforms in the same answer. The GetResponse answer also included its own website and pages from competing email marketing platforms.

G2 and Capterra provide structured software profiles and customer reviews. People comparing SaaS products may use them to assess features, use cases, support, and user experiences. Our data shows these sources appeared in the answers, but it does not prove that the platforms are preferred in every software query.

What this means:

SaaS teams should check the accuracy and completeness of their G2 and Capterra profiles, explain product features and use cases clearly, and invite genuine customer reviews. They should also check which competing products and sources appear when buyers ask about their software.

Finding 5: Smaller review platforms appeared in specific business categories

The most cited domains were not the only sources in the answers. Several smaller platforms appeared in a narrow set of categories. Birdeye recorded three citation appearances in service answers, and Clutch recorded three. TrustRadius appeared once in SaaS, while Angi appeared once in services.

Third party domainTotal mentionsBrand answersMain category

TrustRadius11SaaS
Angi11Services

The raw URLs show Birdeye pages for The Maids, Disruptive Advertising, and Consultwebs. Clutch appeared for Disruptive Advertising and Consultwebs. Glassdoor appeared for Yomly and Consultwebs, which shows that a general review query can bring up employee review sources as well as customer review pages.

What this means:

A platform with a small overall count may still matter to a specific industry. Check the sources that appear for direct competitors and focus on platforms that fit your business, customers, and location. Do not create profiles everywhere just because a domain appeared once in this study.

Finding 6: ChatGPT sometimes misunderstood the brand name

A review query only provides useful brand visibility data if ChatGPT understands which business the user means. Our raw data included several cases where the name was ambiguous or the answer referred to the wrong entity.

QueryWhat happened
Tenet reviewsThe answer cited sources about the 2020 film Tenet, not the Tenet agency.
Teamwork reviewsChatGPT asked whether the query meant Teamwork.com software or teamwork as a workplace skill. No sources were shown.
Diggs reviewsChatGPT asked whether the user meant DIGGS pet products, Diggs Pizza, or football player Stefon Diggs. No sources were shown.
Nomad reviewsChatGPT asked about Nomad Goods, a restaurant, a hotel, or an eSIM provider.
Misen reviewsThe answer included a cookware Reddit link, but the notes flag that the answer asked for clarification about Misen cookware.

These examples show why a source count on its own can be misleading. Tenet had several citations, but they were about a film, not the agency. Teamwork and Diggs produced no citations because ChatGPT asked for clarification.

What this means:

When measuring AI visibility, record whether ChatGPT identified the right business, asked a clarification question, or returned the wrong entity. Businesses with common names should use consistent brand details and clear descriptions across their websites and public profiles. SEO teams should exclude irrelevant citations from measures of meaningful brand visibility.

Key lessons for SEO teams

  • Test branded review queries directly. Search for your brand and key competitors in ChatGPT using the same query format.
  • Check that ChatGPT identifies the correct business before counting citations.
  • Track total citation appearances and unique brand answers separately.
  • Choose third party platforms based on your industry. G2 and Capterra appeared in SaaS answers, Reddit was prominent in ecommerce, and BBB appeared often for ecommerce and services.
  • Review the exact pages ChatGPT cites. A pricing page, a complaint page, a retailer listing, and a customer review thread serve different purposes.
  • Do not focus only on review websites. The raw data also included retailers, editorial publishers, community discussions, local pages, and brand owned content.
  • Keep your company information accurate across your website and relevant third party profiles.
  • Encourage honest reviews and respond to customer concerns. Avoid fake reviews and artificial community activity.
  • Repeat the same checks over time. AI answers can change, so record dates, prompts, URLs, and whether the answer identified the right brand.
  • Treat these findings as a starting point, not proof of causation. The study shows which sources appeared in this snapshot, not what makes ChatGPT select them.

Final thoughts

This study shows that ChatGPT used a mix of third-party sources when answering “[Brand] reviews” for 30 mid-market businesses. BBB had the most citation appearances, Trustpilot appeared across the most brand answers, Reddit stood out for ecommerce, and G2 and Capterra were more visible in SaaS answers.

The raw URLs add another layer to the results. ChatGPT sometimes cited competitors, brand owned pages, retailer listings, editorial reviews, local pages, and community discussions. It also sometimes misunderstood the intended brand. These details show why a useful AI visibility study needs to review the full answer and each cited URL, not just count domains.

For SEO teams, the next step is straightforward: run the same checks for your own brand and competitors, validate the answer, classify the source pages, and track the results over time. A larger study with repeated checks, more brands, and additional query types would help test how stable these patterns are.

To put these results in context, our AI SEO statistics research tracks how often AI tools cite sources and how visibility patterns shift over time.

FAQs about which websites ChatGPT cites for brand reviews

1. Which third party websites does ChatGPT cite most for brand reviews?

In a study of 30 mid market brands, BBB.org received the most citation appearances, with 21 mentions across 12 brand answers. Trustpilot followed with 18 mentions across 18 brand answers, while Reddit appeared 11 times. Other frequently cited websites included G2, with 9 mentions, and Capterra, with 5.

These findings suggest that ChatGPT responses to branded review queries can cite review platforms, customer discussion forums, and business review websites.

2. Does ChatGPT cite different review websites for SaaS, ecommerce, and service businesses?

Yes. The study found differences in the third party websites cited across the three business categories. For SaaS brands, G2 appeared 6 times and Capterra appeared 5 times. For ecommerce brands, BBB and Reddit each appeared 10 times, followed by Trustpilot with 8.

For service businesses, BBB led with 11 mentions, followed by Trustpilot with 6. This suggests businesses should examine the sources appearing in their own industry rather than relying on a single review platform.

3. How often does ChatGPT cite Trustpilot and BBB for brand review queries?

In the study of 30 brands, ChatGPT cited BBB.org 21 times across 12 brand answers and Trustpilot 18 times across 18 brand answers. BBB had more total citation appearances, partly because some answers included multiple BBB links, such as business profiles, customer reviews, and complaint pages. Trustpilot appeared across more distinct brand answers.

These figures measure citations in the sampled responses, not website traffic, customer trust, or the likelihood of being cited in future answers.

4. Does ChatGPT use Reddit when answering questions about product and brand reviews?

Yes. Reddit appeared 11 times across the study’s aggregate results, including 10 citation appearances in ecommerce answers. The cited discussions covered topics such as product quality, sizing, durability, delivery delays, and customer experiences. This indicates that public discussions can be among the sources ChatGPT references when users search for brand reviews.

However, the study does not establish that Reddit discussions cause a brand to be cited or that every discussion influences ChatGPT’s answers.

5. Why does ChatGPT sometimes cite the wrong brand or unrelated websites?

ChatGPT can return unrelated sources when a brand name has multiple meanings or matches different entities. In the study, a search for Tenet reviews returned sources about the 2020 film rather than the Tenet agency. Queries for Teamwork, Diggs, and Nomad also raised ambiguity about which company or product the user meant. Businesses can help distinguish their identity by maintaining consistent brand names, clear descriptions, official website information, and accurate third party profiles.

6. How can businesses improve their visibility in ChatGPT brand review searches?

Businesses can start by checking which third-party websites ChatGPT cites when users search for their brand name followed by “reviews.”

The study suggests different priorities by category: SaaS businesses should examine their G2 and Capterra presence, ecommerce brands should monitor relevant BBB listings and Reddit discussions, and service businesses should pay attention to BBB and Trustpilot. Companies should also keep their business details accurate, address customer complaints professionally, and review the sources ChatGPT references.
